How are you feeling right now?

It is 8 PM , as I leave from my office to home, quite a bit of a hectic and tiresome day. Slightly tired but had a quick meeting with colleagues before winding up.

More than writing about me, I wanted to share information via my blog. Though this isn’t my speciality, I will delegate the information seeking to chatgpt so that u get a summary of my research.

EQ or Emotional Intelligence is how we handle our situation at various circumstances. It is essential to build relationships, effective leadership and overall well being of oneself.

It was coined and popularized by Daniel Golemans , in his book” Emotional Intelligence “

IQ is measured by cognitive abilities, EQ assesses Emotional and social skills.

High EQ is often more predictive of success in life than EQ. IQ is relatively stable throughout life where as EQ can be developed and improved with practice and self awareness.

EQ can be categorised into 4 different components, namingly

  • Self awareness
  • Self regulation
  • Social awareness
  • Social skills

Higher EQ attributes to better mental health, reduced stress, improved well being. there are various tools to measure or assess the EQ of a person , namely, Emotional Quotient Inventory EQI and MSCIET. (fun task, Google urself and try to pronounce the name of this test).

EQ is very critical in conflict resolution, and negotiation. Teaching emotional intelligence to children have long term benefits, helping them to form healthier relationships and handle challenges sensibly.

How to teach to Children? here are the ways:

  • be a role model. Thinking of my kids , not sure I succeeded in this but have influenced them a lot
  • Help children to label emotions.
  • Validate their feelings by trying to understand and accept their emotions.
  • Teach empathy, ask them how would others feel in some situation.
  • Listen to them . A difficult task for me.
  • Use stories and role play, discuss how would characters in a story feel.
  • Encourage to express them via art, writings , etc.
  • Practice patience. Again a difficult one for me, but I’m trying to become a shifu in this.
  • Reward positive behaviour. Yes atleast one I do, my kids have earned a few pounds for the good work they did.
  • Open communication. Another difficult one.

On a lighter note, the EQ studies are gender biased. Yes women tend to score higher than men in EQ.( no, not again 😭)
